Best Fonts for Children's Books

Sometimes, you need something creative to get your creative juices & energy flowing. You're looking for some good fonts, but every single one you try makes your story look bad. It's so annoying when the only good, pre-installed fonts you can think of for a children's book are Georgia, Twentieth Century MT (Tw Cen MT) and Arial. That's why I've compiled an organized, detailed and helpful list of the Best Fonts for Children's Books. Instead of the plain old, same old, spice up your book with some free but awesome new fonts! Instead of sticking with the boring ones, I've added some classic, elegant, unique, stylish and beautiful fonts for you! (And of course, if your a newbie font user & discoverer, I've got some better options than Comic Sans MS and Papyrus.)

Titles
Titles: Titles are what catch people's eye. If you use a font like Georgia, Papyrus or Comic Sans MS, you'll get no one's attention (unless they are saying what bad taste the designer of the book had!).

RALEWAY
Raleway, and yes, it's spelt Raleway, is another great font. It's perfect for titles - and it's very neat. Raleway is not a messy font. It's smooth and very straight forward. For more mature kids, this font is a very wise choice.
Age Recommendation: Ooh, a tough one. I'd recommend using this in books for ages 7+ because it's more mature design makes it multipurpose - it's good for 9 to 12 year olds. Actually, it's pretty good for any age. (Including adults!)

YUMMYCUPCAKES
YummyCupcakes, a typeface designed by Vanessa Bays, is so sweet! (Pun intended.) You already know by its name YummyCupcakes is a good font. It's special because the * and | keys are cupcakes, peace signs and hearts. Just a bonus!
Age Recommendation: Every age! If you want specific: Age 5+. Nothing below five!
Download for Free* at By the Butterfly http://bythebutterfly.com/ (go to 'Fonts' and scroll down to find YummyCupcakes)
*the font is not free. please purchase the font from By the Butterfly, Vanessa's website. The price is around $15 for one font, and has special deals for 5+ fonts or more--you can buy them in bulk--it's around $10 for 5 fonts. What a great deal!

OTHER BY THE BUTTERFLY FONTS
Although YummyCupcakes is only one of the By the Butterfly fonts, there are many more (about 20. that's why I can't write about them all!) worth looking at. Not all of them look like YummyCupcakes, if you didn't like that font, by the way. So please support Vanessa Bays & By the Butterfly by purchasing one/some fonts! She has great deals for buying fonts in bulk. Plus, when you buy the font, you also buy the long term license!
Age Recommendation: Every age. Including babies & adults.
Website: www.bythebutterfly.com
Deals: 25 fonts for $100
(unlimited license), 55 fonts for $200 (unlimited license), All of her 90+ fonts plus any future fonts she makes for $300 (includes all font licenses). $15 for one font, $10 for five or more fonts & $8 for ten or more fonts.

Subtitles
Subtitles, such as the chapter title, or on the cover the author/illustrator's name, etc. Subtitles are less important than titles/body text, but still play an important role.

HERO & HERO LIGHT
Hero & its sister font, Hero Light, are perfect for a title/subtitle. They are wide and multipurpose. Hero is good because if you don't like it in its normal thickness there is also a thin version.
Age Recommendation: Every age! Probably about 4+. I would not recommend using it in something professional.

Body Text
Body Text: body text is the text that is used throughout the whole book (for every chapter, page, etc.)

CANDIDA BT
Candida BT (Roman), an unknown beauty, is a wonderful font although it's not well known. Used in Annie Barrow and Sophie Blackall's Ivy and Bean Series, it looks good in any size and is easy for kids to read. Candida BT is modern style with a few bits of classic woven in.
Age Recommendation: I'd recommend using this font in books for children ages 6 to 10. It's a pretty clear font, although not the best for five years old and under.
Download for Free at Font Palace                                                                          http://www.fontpalace.com/font-details/Candida+BT+Roman

SEGOE UI
Segoe UI, a simple, unique font is perfect for just about every kind of text you need! This font looks best in smaller sizes, as small as 10 pt to around 20 pt. But after 20 pt, it's best as subtitles.
Age Recommendation: Every age, no strings attached! From ages 0 to 100, this font is good for everyone. It's simple for young children to read, and not to babyish for older children or adults.

  2. Thank you - nice fonts! I like Stempel Schneidler, Cabrito, and Charcuterie. I've used Stempel Schneidler for a number of children's books. The only character that's a little odd is the question mark, which I replace with Minion. Thanks again!

  4. Dafont.com is a site where you can download a ton of free fonts. You can search for a specific typeface, or search by the type of lettering you want, whether it’s serif or sans serif, hand lettered or grunge style. You can also put in your own phrase to see how it looks in a particular font. A lot of these fonts are very decorative and many are handdrawn, so it’s not always the best place to search for body text fonts. Each selection also tells you whether your download is free for personal or commercial use. The download is easy – you get a zip file with the font file inside. Unzip, install, and you’re ready to go.
